@ben Thanks! He's not doing watercolors though, no? Hm, but ok, I'm googling him now, and maybe I now understand what you mean - indeed, blue, brown, red, various colors but rarely black - so this aspect could be also done in watercolors! By the way this now reminded me, that since starting this technique (I'm a total amateur), I wondered how one can do night in watercolors - also difficult to find examples on the web, but maybe they'd share a similar idea!

@akavel I think he mostly worked in casein, but as far as what colors might work, paint is paint, and I think the looseness of his style can be inspirational for watercolors
