May 20, 2026. There are a lot of cows in New Mexico. I should probably have not put the tree in, and just let the composition be all cow, but mostly I was focusing on how much I hate this sketchbook. It's always surprising to me how much the quality of paper affects the painting. It's probably more important than bushes or paint.

This series, I've been using a square Art Creation sketchbook that I saw recommended on YouTube, which is terrible but cheap, and a Stillman and Birn alpha, which is excellent but expensive (the non-square sketches). I think I've found a better tiny sketchbook that is both good and cheap, and I'll talk about that one when I get to those paintings.
