May 21, the CDT crosses NM 12 south of the Mangas Mountains. There is a trailhead and a water cache (the little white dots on the ground to the left of the sign.) Water caches like this greatly reduce the difficulty of the hike. They are usually maintained by volunteers, sometimes removed by rangers, occasionally damaged by vandals (this one is visible from the road, most aren't) and frequently over-used by hikers.
