I recut the block more carefully, did some work prints and recuts, did some more prints for learning, and finally got a close enough version, that I'm going to call a proof. 

Figured out why you print one color, then let it dry before doing the second, which also made the purpose of stripping pins very clear. Masking tape works if you print wet on wet. And since most these will be cards, and registration doesn't need to be tight, I just use the edge of the paper.
