@jaykuo that's interesting. There are far more than 250,000 US citizens who have died since social security records were digitized; I wonder what's special about these 250K people that others were deleted and they were not? I also don't see a strong reason to remove dead people from the Social Security database; a flag on the record would be fine.

@jaykuo there's also a whole office of the SSA dedicated to fraud prevention. It's a pretty serious federal crime.
