I hate when interfaces that previously had nice, clear lines, *literal lines*, between interface elements of different semantic type, get redesigned to instead have vague, fuzzy, screen-eating¹ whitespace dividers. I have hated this since 2009. I stopped using the iPhone because it adopted this philosophy. I feel it massively increases cognitive load because instead of functional areas the screen is just various floating text

¹ I use apps at a relatively high zoom level and my screen is not big

I recognize why private messages within a thread can be confusing, but I really like how private messages on Mastodon are "hallway track" side discussions from regular threads instead of there being a shitty IM app crammed into every social network which everyone just uses to set up IM conversations on better IM apps. It's very good that Mastodon DMs are *pinned to discussions*, and odd that Mastodon is killing virtually the only feature distinguishment they have with bsky. ---Attachments--- image: https://files.mastodon.social/media_attachments/files/117/118/850/840/854/337/original/1388bf07a8bb62dd.png

What happens in Mastodon 5.0 if I, *not* using Mastodon 5.0, reply to someone else's post with a "private mention"? Will they, on Mastodon 5.0, be able to see the private mention is branching off of a thread? Will that fact be hidden? Will it be formatted like a qrt?
