I don’t think he is dead. I think it is a construct or alien duplicoid. I’m thinking they are going Parallax with Hal. 

Long shot theory:  John Stewart’s dad is the original John Stewart and is a former backup. Green Lantern.  His son is a new one. That’s how his dad knew how to train John.

Actually the dad being original John Stewart makes a lot of sense because I always through Hal and John were much closer in age from the comics (correct me if I'm totally off the rails).
