Tonight's movie was Navy Seals (1990). A jigonistic propoganda film that ironically portrays the Navy Seals as a bunch of undisciplined clowns.
Completely unrealistic protrayal of military operations. What the hell is Bill Paxton's Barrett M82A1 sniper rifle chambered with? It's punching pizza sized holes through people and causing RPG-like explosions. Pretty sure it's not semi-automatic either. A Navy Seal that is surprrised that a Stinger launcher is a single shot only? C'mon. Also, pretty sure they used the Stinger wrong. Dude slices another dude's throat underwater, zero blood.
Chaotic, dull and generic action sequences strung together with uninteresting slices of Navy Seal off duty life. Cardboard cutout characters with actors just going through the motions. The only memorable character is Charlie Sheen's character and that's because he was an annoying jackass. "Only 10% make it," says Biehn's character. How in the hell did Sheen's character make it?
Someone decided that they could take the Top Gun formula and apply it to the Navy Seals. Unfortunately director Lewis Teague is not Tony Scott. This movie has none of the visual flair of Top Gun, it is uninspired, flat and looks like it was made-for-TV. Instead of a beach volleyball scene, we get.. golf. Fighter jets are definitely more exciting than rubber inflatable rafts.
Michael Biehn did what he could have with what he got. Bill Paxton was awesome as always. One star for Biehn, one star for Paxton.
Rated 2 out of 10.
Watched on a used Blu-ray that I bought for $2, it wasn't worth the cost.
