i'm moderately bored at all times so you should come bother me on matrix dot com
i like reading books and doing stupid things with computers and being right on the internet
they should make computers good and not bad
in dark times, should the stars also go out?
come say hi at 40c3 or perhaps easterhegg

@cwebber @dragon obvs i saw the local-first meets ocaps talk from FOSDEM, but i didn't realise that the synthesis work went deeper than a one-off demo
this is really exciting!

@dragon goblins has some peer-to-peer stuff for relays etc but i wouldn't say they're trying to provide too much stuff beyond "you're able to invoke capabilities over a network in a way that traverses NAT"
at this point i'm a little out of my depth so i'd be curious if @cwebber you think my comparison of modal vs spritely's work is charitable

@dragon in general i would say networked ocaps and local-first are trying to do reasonably different things
networked ocaps are quite good ways of doing security models over a network, and delegating the kind of things that peers can do with your shit
local-first is for like, eventual consistency even in a very low-availability environment

@dragon what do you mean by a substrate?

@dragon i'm a bit of a modal shill so obviously im gonna shill them but yeah in objective terms their main product rn is a notes app (long-term aiming to be a sort of peer-to-peer cryptpad but not ready for primetime yet)

@dragon there's also obvs the funding issue - these are GNOME devs who are mostly funded to do other things e.g. GNOME Core or design work
as an example tobias bernard is mainly doing GNOME shell rn
basically the STF money dried up a couple months ago and it's been a bit slow before they get more funding to keep doing more reflection stuff etc

@dragon so, the notetaking app is a demo/testground for their peer-to-peer work. a lot of them are devs for a peer-to-peer sync system called peer2panda, so reflection is used to do a lot of groundbreaking work in peer-to-peer sync.
obviously on the surface that's just a notes app but under the hood that's peer-to-peer UX patterns research, work on the (environment-agnostic) rust crates for peer-to-peer sync, integration of peer-to-peer libraries into the GNOME stack, etc
on top of that they do a lot of work in desktop stack stuff such as packaging work for immutable distros
