Phosh's BengalOS booting on a SHIFT8. Thanks to the #Linux #sc7280 maintainers for their work!
That's the first device booting on BengalOS that is still available for sale (and will be for some time). There's plenty of stuff missing on the kernel side to make that usable, but it's a start.

SHIFT 6MQ.
cameras working 6 months ago: zero.
with today release of sdm845-next kernel (tag sdm845-next-20260820-3):
- main 16MP rear camera (Sony IMX519), incl. focus
- secondary 24MP (Samsung S5K2X7SP), incl. focus
- front 16MP (Samsung S5K3P9SP)
works. Seems to work reliably so far.
Beware, Tux is watching.
Tomorrow the 6MQ going with me to the Winterthur for the MiniDebConf.

It's been over 2 months now that I switched from a mutable LinuxMobile distro (that served me very well for the last couple of years) to immutable #BengalOS as my daily driver 📱.
Having used apt and friends for ages I expected transition pain but having toolbox 🧰, nothing like that happened. I just enjoy the save upgrades and recent software versions.

Since Friday, BengalOS gained support for DisplayPort on SHIFT 6MQ.
This is a new addition to the recently added USB-C role switching (OTG).
Kernel support included from the `sdm845-next-20260820-15` tag, if you want to integrate it into your project!

As added bonus, we are also experimenting with kill switches and gaining initial experience.
Depending on feedback we might expand further on it.
For now Camera and Microphones can be (physically) disconnected and turned off.
We also got some requests to also allow disconnecting USB data lanes.
So if you got any feedback, it would be much appreciated.
We are always trying to learn more and improve and we have already learned this works best when listening to you and the communities. :)

To enable UART over USB-C, you have to unscrew around 8 screws (at the current EVT stage) (screwdiver provided with the device's retail packaging) and flip a switch.

I have just received an USB-Cereal from 0xda which allows to retrieve UART logs!
(Though it seems the SBU pins are backwards on my EVT device and i had to plug it with the back facing me. Something to fix for later development stages)

We at SHIFT are trying to make our devices more developer friendly.
The step i personally consider most important is getting access to logs to make bringups easier.
There are not many worse things than trying to get something to boot up without any indication of what is happening.
With the upcoming SHIFTphone 8 this should be way easier, as we have added a switch to toggle UART via USB-C, which means no soldering required anymore!

対応しているQualcommのSoC上で標準のAndroidブートローダーの代わりに使うことができて、Androidもそのままブートできるし、AndroidじゃないディストリビューションのLinuxカーネルをブートすることもできる（しUEFIブートもできる？）。
