There are techniques for creating a CDN that can support a community while keeping costs down.
You can trace the history of these techniques back to at least the 1990s.
Broadly speaking, these techniques were use with:
BitTorrent, Private BitTorrent Trackers, and Direct Connect.
I think the Fediverse can and should learn from these techniques, and put them to use.

There are definitely affordable commercial choices for CDNs for smaller sites and home-labers.
But, if you are trying to build a community (with many, many users) — a CDN can become expensive. Even very expensive.
(Electronic Arts (EA) has a whole team that takes up half a floor whose job iis to negotiate pricing from the Akamai CDN company.)

A CDN is a service that stores copies of your website's files in many locations around the world so visitors can download them from a nearby server instead of one far away. This makes your website load faster and stay available even when lots of people are using it at the same time.
CDNs are not only important for Fediverse servers but they are important for the Web in general

I want to share a workaround for Mastodon users who get boosted by #tagspub bots but don't want the notifications: you can't yet turn off bot notifications in Mastodon, but you can filter notifications from people who don't follow you. This will catch all the tags.pub bots -- they don't follow anyone.

This version adds a QR code and copy handle on profiles, a Solarized theme, followed hashtags in the home timeline and text translation in the compose screen.
It also brings several fixes such as uploaded custom emojis not displayed and empty lists. Bugs for desktop releases are also fixed.

I've disabled the ability now for folks to create invites here on #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon - We've had some issues with folks using it as a way to bypass our approval checks resulting in some accounts getting registered that I'm not happy have been registered. Those accounts are being dealt with but for the time being invites will be disabled so apologies.
The upcoming Mastodon 4.6 version should have some extra settings that will allow us to re-enable invites while maintaining our approval checks and we're working behind the scenes on a few things that we hope will streamline approvals either way.
