I wasn't a Briar user but I sympathize with the challenges the developers had with it, particularly on mobile OSes. Push notifications are one of the biggest blockers to p2p gaining traction, especially on iOS.

---Reply--- dave@dthompson@toot.cat (2026-07-16 01:32:22) it's already hard enough to do something novel in the chat space because network effects are strong. if you're not a p2p nerd then why would you care, right? age verification/chat control legislation may be the thing that pushes p2p chat into the mainstream if the legal landscape gets bad enough, but the mobile OSes will still be hostile to it.

spritely has a pretty novel p2p chat design that could use further exploration but it's difficult to get anyone with money to care about it because chat apps are a dime a dozen.
