Reply to @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social dave@dthompson@toot.cat (2026-07-05 03:14:58) @ocdtrekkie yeah I'm not excited about that either. I wish one of the big companies would just make a truly mini truck with a 6' bed.
dave@dthompson@toot.cat (2026-07-05 02:51:11) Been going down a bit of a kei truck rabbit hole and wishing you could buy something in that form factor but electric in the US. I don't know why the only 2 (as far as I know) electric mini trucks in development in the US are not fully embracing the kei truck design and capitalizing on the trend with is part aesthetics and part practicality.
The Slate has a classic US truck shape which wastes space in the front and thus it only has a 5' bed despite only having a 2 seater cab. Worse, the bed width is only 42" so you cannot easily fit a standard 8x4 sheet of plywood which seems like an obvious use case to support if the truck is intended to actually be used as a truck.
Then there's the Telo MT1 which has more of a kei truck shape. Their marketing materials explicitly say it can fit a sheet of plywood, however that requires some removable partition to increase the bed length because they chose a 5 seat cab. Feels more like truck cosplay than a practical vehicle.

dave@dthompson@toot.cat (2026-07-03 22:12:00) The atproto permissioned space proposal is out. Seems to be more or less as described in earlier blog posts. It's an ACL system where each space has a central gatekeeper that maintains the list of who has read privilege. Spaces are partitioned amongst many repos but all repos have to be queried to get the complete history so it's unlike distributed version control in that no one has a full copy of the data. If I were a prospective user of this I'd be concerned with confused deputy vulnerabilities and repo availability.

But it looks like this is going to become more important because Beancount is going full vibes "I don't even code anymore" https://groups.google.com/g/beancount/c/cz8Xwnb7BLE/m/LSA3rTfMAgAJ
And so, seemingly, is everything else in the command line accounting space https://social.glitched.systems/notes/aj8ubrinpqdw01fe
Maybe that'll end up making this more important, dunno

Wanted to get into @spritely tech but you didn't use emacs or didn't run Guix or all those other things? What if there was a structural editor right in the browser that was *designed* for hacking on @spritely tech?
Well that's EXACTLY what @dthompson is working on! I gave it a test today and built this cool picture language demo, printing out a rainbow right at the REPL!
It's a structural editor! So you're not even editing text, you're editing the structure of the code itself! It's damn cool! ---Attachments--- image: https://social-coop-media.ams3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/media_attachments/files/116/845/637/121/685/893/original/e2a052ea970a28eb.png

Love to see Jacobin talking about energy efficiency for existing homes - it's a non-negotiable piece of the puzzle in any humane climate scenario, highly related to class, and has a lot of headroom for scaling impact by adding labor with minimal training needs. And of course it's also a problem that capitalism can't properly incentivize solving because it's not "cost efficient" to do right in a large portion of the housing stock.

A new blogpost from me. I believe the fight for keeping the internet free is more important than ever but also under more threats than ever.
And the irony is, centralization is partly to blame: people don't feel like the internet is theirs anymore.
But we can't leave it there.
We HAVE to act.
For our sake, for our kids' sake, for ourselves, for the future.

dave@dthompson@toot.cat (2026-06-30 20:50:01) Ever get obsessed with a specific chord? I don't really know how to play the guitar but the opening chord to Blood Incantation's The Message sounded so cool I had to figure out what it was. It's Abmaj7. They play it in drop C tuning: 8 8 8 10 10 10. Drop D is easier for my noob brain so I just shifted that up a whole step to 6 6 6 8 8 8. Playing it is kinda hard for me but I think it's what they call a barre chord. Your index finger goes across the entire 8th fret and then your pinky covers the 3 high strings on the 6th fret, that was what felt easiest to me and it's what I see people doing in YouTube covers. Awkward for me since I can only really do power chords but it sounds awesome.
