I'm sat here trying to defend myself to strangers about a throwaway blog post I wrote because I've already been accused of being anti-human, anti-learning, and patronising to non-techies. Is this normal? It's not an enjoyable experience.

@taichara @neatnik harsh. where did i suggest that non-techies can't follow instructions? i just said "it's more complicated" for non-techies than techies naturally think.

@olly @neatnik I am not remotely a "techie" and I got the html for my slowly coming together webpage onto a host in literal minutes with no complications.
I'll thank you to not assume all we non-"techies" can't follow simple instructions.

So is learning a new skill not something worth pursuing? Learning to knit or baking a soufflé is also hard, yet people still do it even though they could buy a jumper or go to a restaurant.
And if someone learns HTML and CSS, maybe they'll love it, and they learn PHP, SQL or JavaScript. I did, and it has brought me so much joy.

my take is that the vast majority of non-techies who face a problem with HTML/CSS/FTP/DNS (the things you will encounter when 'simply' putting a web page on the internet) will now use an LLM to solve it, wittingly or unwittingly. google is essentially an LLM now, and most people default to chatgpt. you might avoid it, but most humans don't. that's the reality i'm afraid.

@raeubervater @neatnik even with a server in your closet you're going to depend on 3rd party companies in the stack somewhere – email, ISP, DNS, etc etc...
Anyway it's just my opinion in a crappy blog post that's probably weakly positioned... I hate debates on social media.

@shannonkay @sylvia My piece was certainly with blogging in mind, for sure, but I think the point still stands for basic websites. I use Jekyll for one of my own sites, pretty complex imo. The point about no dependencies also isn't true since you need a 3rd party web host unless you have an always-on server with a static IP in your closet 🤷♂️

@neatnik I didn't write this to sell my web service. I wrote it because I disagree with your premise. I hold the position that getting HTML files on a web server is more complicated for non-techies than techies naturally think ✌️

@neatnik I haven't missed the point. I'm merely suggesting it's more complicated than you say. Maybe we have different ideas. Perhaps you could outline the steps required to maintain a blog using raw HTML and CSS hosted somewhere on the internet and we'll discuss over a practical example?
Also, "uploading them to a web server" literally introduced a dependency on others! 😅🤷♂️
