Had a discussion today with someone who also grew up on the East Coast. We were talking about how cold and distant a lot of folk in the SF Bay Area can be, for a lot of reasons.
It's expensive as hell, so folk have to work constantly just to afford anything.
Lots of folk are temporary, so they don't want to spend the energy to build connections.
There's little existing sense of community, so no one wants to take the first step.
He was on point. He was also from New York, (and I grew up around DC), and yeah, it's weird around here.
Trust me when I say, though, it's absolutely worth the effort to talk to your neighbors and spend a few minutes actually listening to them. When things go south due to a fire or quake or anything else, those are the folk that will help you.

@olly @markhysted Wipr2 and wBlock. But it's as easy as you say. Rename the class and aria-label to btt or someting odd and it's working. But why does this only work in the custom body part and not the custom css? anyway - thanks Olly :)

I agree that hosted services are much better for most bloggers, and that a key point is having the portability of a personal domain name and data portability.
I know that "regular" people are not going to do most of the weird things that I choose to do, so I go around testing web hosts and whatnot for beginners.

Oh, there are never no dependencies. I do host from a NAS in my living room, but I rely on DDNS service, the local ISP, etc.
Jekyll is relatively complex, and sometimes I do wonder if I should move my blog to something with less barrier to update.
What I meant for a non-blog static site was that it's much simpler to write some basic HTML/CSS than to run a static site generator, and a relative beginner can write a basic page and upload to a web host.

@jan it's the tone of some the replies. i can't bear social media tbh. i'll probably stick around at some level, but won't engage and just block. best way to follow pagecord is the weekly email :)

@olly I've finally read up on this. I'm not entirely sure how the discussion got so heated and personal. Self-hosting can be a headache and for the vast majority of users, it's never just uploading some HTML.
I really enjoyed following Pagecord's progress here. I hope the Fediverse doesn't lose you.

I saw your post and I get your reasoning. I'm happy to use your service. I did html since 2000 and played with css, js as well and while I could do it all myself, I'm happy that I don't. I already have more than enough going on. And while there is a risk with Pagecord eventually going away, everything important which I post is hosted in Obsidian so I'll be able to restart if ever needed.
Take some time if you need to.
Thanks for your platform and keep building.
