Federated Timeline

Evan Prodromou@evan@cosocial.ca (2026-05-03 07:27:41) I believe the Fediverse can connect people in meaningful ways and that so joined we can make a more just, equitable and sustainable world.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @dansup@mastodon.social (2026-05-02 19:38:13) I'm in awe of the continued support I have for my fediverse projects (Pixelfed, Loops, FediDB, Fediverse.info + more)

I was feeling pretty bad a few days ago and questioning everything due to financial difficulties, but you reminded me how important these open and ethical alternatives are, and a few of you donated and it means the world to me.

Thank you ❤️

I will continue building to make the social web a better place.

If I do this, it would be a one-time fundraiser, not a recurring campaign. I will share an update once it is done. (3/5)

I think our team will provide a full implementation in the near future. But to reiterate, at the moment this already works on the federation level.

You’re underestimating the power of Elgg 🙂

Here’s an example of how it looks — this is a public group with ActivityPub enabled: https://demo.wzm.me/activitypub/groups/165/

Reply to @apps@toot.fedilab.app Fedilab Apps@apps@toot.fedilab.app (2026-05-03 06:20:16) The 2019 Intel MacBook Pro is reaching its limits. Beyond Fedilab and iOS apps, I also run Docker containers locally to test my web projects (Holos Discover, Holos Relay, Fedle) and to build Fedilab for F-Droid. The 512 GB SSD fills up every two weeks, parallel builds are no longer possible, and Xcode performance on Intel is far behind Apple Silicon.
I can keep going like this, but it is not comfortable. (2/5)

Fedilab Apps@apps@toot.fedilab.app (2026-05-03 06:20:16) A bit of context before a poll at the end of this thread. I want to be transparent about something I am considering, and ask for your honest input before going further.
A few years ago I bought a used Intel MacBook Pro to start exploring iOS development alongside Fedilab. The bet has paid off. The Apple Developer license is paid, Holos is now live on iOS via TestFlight, and Fediplan and CastLab are next in line for iOS (1/5)

In any case, we can't apply a policy retroactively because FEPs can't be changed without author's consent.

I spend a lot of time thinking about simplicity. Fewer dependencies, lighter
pages, tools that do one thing well. So yes, it might look strange that I also
spend time talking to large language models. Let me explain where I draw the
line, and why I think the contradiction is smaller than it appears...

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @mczachurski@mastodon.social (2026-05-02 22:17:58) Implementing and testing ActivityPub on localhost is incredibly painful - if it’s even possible in some cases. I really wish there were a self-hosted service that could simulate other ActivityPub instances, runnable on multiple ports with alias-based addressing. Being able to locally test federation traffic, security scenarios, and edge cases would be amazing. 🫣

Activity delivery now goes through the relay proxy, which fixes boost and like failures on #iOS. Sync performance is also improved.
It also brings several fixes: images disappearing after posting, the iOS "No valid public key" error during setup, and the custom relay tunnel URL being ignored.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @everton137@social.vivaldi.net (2026-04-18 04:42:23) I had the opportunity to tell the founders of the Sovereign Tech Agency (@sovtechfund) that I'm a big fan of their organization. I firmly believe that other countries should have similar initiatives. In fact, the EU should have one too.

Their recent €600k+ grant to Mastodon is a great example of what public investment in open digital infrastructure can look like. It strengthens the Fediverse, a real alternative to X. As I’ve argued in the #LeaveX campaign: we already have a viable social media alternative to X (1) and what we lack is sustained funding and political commitment. (2)

Thus, if more EU countries invested in improving Mastodon, how quickly could it become Europe’s de facto public square?

While most European politicians still prefer X for their official communication, reducing technical barriers could attract a more diverse audience, including the people our representatives want to reach, like journalists and the general public.

By the way, it's interesting, though not surprising, that the Sovereign Tech Agency has almost four times as many followers on Mastodon as on Bluesky. It would be great to see them highlighting posts and profiles of some awesome open-source projects active on the Fediverse. 😉

https://movies.pub/movie/Q107105860

UPDATE: I'm at the #wmhack2026 hackathon this weekend, working on mapping movies from Wikidata to ActivityPub objects. It's not for end users. If you don't like JSON, these URLs won't be for you.

I'll try to make that clear from now on.

It's nice for me to share my progress. If you don't like it or you don't care, please be as respectful to me as you would be to other people on the Fediverse sharing things they made.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @silverpill@mitra.social (2026-05-03 02:00:31) Fediverse & P2P
Nomadic identity is a nice feature, but FEP-ef61: Portable Objects is not limited to that. The intention was always to allow peer to peer communication without servers. This is why the protocol was designed to be transport-agnostic: you can use fediverse servers to deliver activities, but you can also use emails, torrents or USB sticks.

To explore these possibilities, I added a simple P2P synchronization mode to Mitra Mini, which allows clients to exchange activities via a shared directory. This doesn't mean that clients should run on the same machine. Syncthing is a tool for P2P file synchronization that can be used to share a directory between multiple machines, and it should work well for our use case.

The P2P mode is available in Mitra Mini v0.4.0. You can use a pre-compiled binary, which is now self-contained and includes the mitra-web frontend. See installation instructions in the readme. To enable P2P mode, add the following block to your configuration file:[federation]
p2p_shared_outbox = "/path/to/shared/directory"

Registering on a web gateway is not necessary when working in P2P mode, but you need to specify it in the config, because a lot of legacy code still depends on that.

If you'd like to connect, DM me your Syncthing device ID (it can be used in a Whonix VM to prevent IP address leaks).
