So today's social media job was setting up #FediProfile. Like many other independent musicians, I have pieces on several platforms. With any luck, FediProfile will be a viable substitute for #Linktree.

In earlier discussion regarding how people expect a Link to work, it seems to me like we uncovered a sort of X-Y issue. Hong Minhee, who develops the Fedify library, indicated that overriding the term definition of "href" to be a literal string instead of a URI reference was intended to avoid dereferencing ids that don't have AS2 representations. The inherent assumption is that any id will have an AS2 representation, but this isn't a valid assumption, because non-AS2 resources exist on the Web (and in fact vastly outnumber AS2 resources).
Across the specification documents for AS2-Core, AS2-Vocab, and AP, the only remotely relevant language I could find was in AP Section 3.2 "Retrieving objects":
The HTTP GET method may be dereferenced against an object's id property to retrieve the activity. Servers MAY use HTTP content negotiation as defined in [RFC7231] to select the type of data to return in response to a request, but MUST present the ActivityStreams object representation in response to application/ld+json; profile="https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams", and SHOULD also present the ActivityStreams representation in response to application/activity+json as well. The client MUST specify an Accept header with the application/ld+json; profile="https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams" media type in order to retrieve the activity. Servers MAY implement other behavior for requests which do not comply with the above requirement
From this, we can see that there is no explicit requirement for every id in an AS2 document to be dereferenceable with an AS2 representation. At most, we can say that ActivityPub requires "c

After three months and 1.6k posts later on snac, I'm super happy. Main things that I like about running snac for my Fediverse presence:
Light on resources. I can run this on a potato if I wanted and it would run great (I'm not, but I could.)Backups are easy. Tar up the directory. Done.Migrations are easy. Install nginx, build snac, untar backup. Done.Quirky web interface. It takes a little to get used to it, but it is very functional and it's got character. I thought I would use Phanpy with it more, but I'm not. I enjoy the snac web interface.Works (mostly) with Mastodon clients. No crazy caching of photos, avatars and other media. This is a really big deal because my disk usage is so much lower than when I ran Mastodon. No database. NO DATABASE. So good.Fast. snac is really fast doing everything. It's nice.@grunfink@comam.es is awesome. Friendly and responsive.#fediverse #snac #snac2 #snacadmin #mastodon #phanpysocial #selfhost #selfhosted

I was thinking earlier, that sitting here on Fedi when I get home, with my reasonably curated feeds, is very much like sitting in a nice coffee house or perhaps a lovely quiet bar. We just chat, and now and again someone will go "ooo, that reminds me..." and we all go off on a tangent for a while. At some point various people will wander off to a couch or whatever, but a couple of new people will wander in and join us.
I LIKE it here. Really. It's exactly as I recall the old BBS days, and early Usenet (before the "September That Never Ended" in 1993, of course).

Do you remember the surprise announcement of a new social network in Davos this past January? Something that promised to be the "first" European social network?
Its name is #WSocial and it's a fork of #Bluesky. Its founders have ties with European politicians - but there is no official involvement by the EU.
You wouldn't know any of this from media reports because they all rehashed their talking points. So I wrote a post about it, dispelling some myths:

If you are in your late thirties to mid-forties right now, there is a good chance that you have spent most of your life in a cycle of making some sort of home on the internet only to have it crumble beneath you like chalk and having to start over.
