On Friday, we finished up the manuscript for the 7th edition of Computer Networks: a Systems Approach and sent it to the publisher. While sending the files to the publisher is something of a milestone, the work is never finished, because we continue to collect improvements and bugfixes from the community as we run this book as an open source project.
The latest edition is the biggest refactoring of the book that we have done since our first edition came out in 1996, reflecting the changes in our field and in the way students and educators are approaching it. In this week's newsletter, Larry has written about some of the changes in how we present material, particularly in how have tried to teach students about the interconnectedness of topics that don't sit neatly in the old layered model.

* auffällig viele Tor-/Proxy-Verbindungen
* 0 Beiträge, 0 Follower
* generische Bewerbungstexte wie „Ich möchte Teil der deutschsprachigen Community werden …“
Besonders perfide: Teilweise werden offenbar echte Bios anderer Fediverse-/Bluesky-Nutzer.innen kopiert. So wirkt die Anmeldung auf den ersten Blick erstaunlich glaubwürdig.
Ein einzelnes Merkmal beweist natürlich nichts. In dieser Kombination sieht es aber sehr nach automatisierter Account-Erstellung aus.
Schaut euch neue Registrierungen derzeit besser etwas genauer an und tauscht Beobachtungen gern unter den Instanzen aus.

Is there something you like that you generally dont recommend to people?
My three:
The Wandering Inn: If you like the first book, then be prepared for the biggest literary piece on earth. Worldbuilding to the extreame.
Creeper World Games: Usually low res, pixelated games about a goo substance that never stops. You "fight" it. Thats the game. I love it, but I cant recommend anyone else.
Preserving Loquats: I have a tree that makes enough preservatives for months every time it creates fruit. Twice a year. Its a huge hassle compared to say strawberries.
What are your "things you like that you dont recommend to everyone"?

I just got a shock. I want the old design back!!! 😭
It was a matter of seconds, and the Design of #Mastodon changed.
Usually, I have nothing against design changes. But if it hits me so unprepared that I think my browser has a bug ...
A real bug is that I have to make an extra click for writing a post now and get a much too small pop up field down at the right (not at eye's height)! I have to search for notifications ... it's less intuitive than before.

New on PeerSeek: a proper watch page. Videos now play right on
the site, with related videos and an autoplay queue.
Search got smarter too. Tags work as search filters now, and you can
filter for videos with subtitles in a language you actually speak.
Results also show which videos have captions before you click.
Related videos are much more on topic these days.

Hi friends!
Now that littleFedi has been released and new instances are starting to appear, we can focus again on development and testing.
From now on, the littleFedi accounts on this instance will work like this:
The announcement - @littlefedi_official - account will be used for announcements: new releases and important communications. It will be a very low-traffic account, so I suggest following it with some attention. A new build, by the way, is not far away... 😉
There will also be an account dedicated to hints, where we will publish, notice the plural 😏, tips, tricks and useful little things about littleFedi. It does not exist yet, but I will create and announce it as soon as possible.
This account will remain more general, as it is now, although of course it will mainly talk about littleFedi.
This instance will remain our test instance. New builds and new features will be tested here before their public release.
For now, the littleFedi development model will also remain the same: the developers develop, fix, experiment and, when something is ready, a new version is released.
Open Source is freedom, not conformity.
littleFedi has its own history, its own way of growing and its own direction. We will keep following them, without trying to imitate a model just because it is the most common one in the Open Source world.
Open Source was born to let people do things differently.
littleFedi is free.

So... Which app are you using for Mastodon lately? Any juicy updates, or new ones?
The feature I want the most is being good at keeping its spot in the timeline, so that I can scroll (up, ideally) towards the present without missing too much stuff.
I follow few enough people that I can actually exhaust my feed, so that's neat.

#Fedilab 3.45.1 fixes a crash with art timelines and Pixelfed timelines. If you use those, skip 3.45.0 when it releases on F-Droid. Furthermore, a bug with the new "show description on hidden media" feature was fixed.

Your Fediverse Management Platform
If you run several Fediverse accounts, you might know the feeling: an idea is sitting in a note somewhere, a scheduled post is in another tab, and the numbers end up somewhere else again. I wanted to bring it all together.
The new #Planner takes a post from the first idea to publication. #Drafts save automatically. In the #ContentCalendar, you can see scheduled posts by month or week and move them to another time. #Campaigns group posts around a topic or event. Coloured #labels help you stay organised without ever appearing as hashtags.
After publishing, the searchable #archive helps you find and reuse your work. You can turn older posts into new drafts, collect evergreen content and spot posts that have become interesting again.
#ContentAnalysis compares formats, text lengths, links and more. Hints based on your own data appear while you write, and the #calendar shows promising time slots. For Mastodon-compatible accounts, the new #CommunityAnalysis shows which accounts interact with your posts, who is new and who keeps coming back. #Favourites, #boosts and #replies stay separate. These are ideas to try, not promises of more reach.
There’s a lot of work under the hood, too: access tokens for connected accounts are now stored encrypted, sessions expire, and one-time links have better protection.
FediSuite is still open source, free to use, without ads or trackers, and available to self-host. The web app supports more than 20 Fediverse platforms.

I've introduced a new property, audiences, which lets you define collections containing actors with a specific role / privilege / affiliation:
