I'm toying with Snac, using it more and more. It's an amazing peace of technology. It does what it does, and doesn't get in my way. Faster than mastodon, better looking (I have a custom theme!) than mastodon, and running in my infrastructure. It checks all the boxes.
It only lacks auto-complete of handles and tags.

- All users can load latest and featured posts from remote profiles. Previously this action was only available to admins.
- A category can be specified when adding an emoji to local collection. Mitra Web doesn't support emoji categories yet, but categorization should work in other clients.
- Improved reliability of the media proxy.
- Added command groups: account, ap, config, emoji, filter, invite, media. They are currently hidden from the main list of commands. Use help subcommand to view information about a group: mitra filter help.

Hi I am new to Mastodon, I don't really know what I am doing here yet. Does anyone know of any cool nonprofits or gamedev people to follow? Currently my feed is just the internet archive. I love that, but it might not lead to a very satisfying experience.

Here's Mastodon's Executive Director @mellifluousbox and @mike on Mastodon’s first decade, and what's ahead.
"So what I'm most excited right now is [...] we are celebrating our 10 years this year, and basically to think of what would it take for Mastodon, not only to still exist in 10 years [but also to become] a much better version of what Mastodon is right now[.]"

Good news: We have addressed recent SSH performance degradation by replacing linear parsing of the authorized_keys file with a custom AuthorizedKeys command.
This is what GitHub and GitLab have been doing for years, and we have grown to a size where this has become necessary for us as well.
The cause for the degradation was still abusive patterns, as connections without valid key take more resources (scanning the file to the end) than legitimate users (scanning is stopped after match).

Towards an open, federated review platform based on OSM
As I migrate away from big tech and towards independent solutions and in particular services powered by OpenStreetMaps and ActivityPub, I often find that the biggest missing piece remaining is that of a social element allowing for user reviews and feedback to locations on the map—in the intersection between the two services.
I have been playing with the idea of how this could be implemented, and decided would share my thoughts on a technically minimal and entirely federated standard for OSM reviews. The idea is to have a very basic ActivityPub integration that can work with even simple (microblog style) messages, allowing users to contribute reviews without having to sign up for additional services or necessarily install custom software.

Anyone got a favorite fediverse web client? I'm shopping for a web frontend for gotosocial. Trying Phanpy at the moment, which is not terrible, but I'm curious what else is out there that might be worth a look.
(In particular, Phanpy seems to burn a lot more CPU just sitting idle in Firefox than the Mastodon web ui does).

Meet #Starling, a lightweight #ActivityPub server for the #Fediverse, built with PHP and SQLite.
Run your own decentralized social platform on shared hosting or a tiny VPS WITHOUT Redis, PostgreSQL, or complex infrastructure.
What it makes so special to me? It looks awesome, comes with a great admin web interface and does not require a VPS instance where it can also be operated on a cheap shared hosting systems. By the given requirements, it also easily runs on a #RaspberryPI and all kind of systems, including #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #Illumos and more!
This all makes it perfect to everyone and even beginners to run their own instance. With relay support (e.g., fedi-relay.gyptazy.com) it even can consume and post content over non-directly connected instances in the #fediworld!
Kudos to the author of Starling: @df@s.dfaria.eu

Most people know about messages, photos and videos on the #Fediverse. But the #ActivityPub protocol actually defines several object types, each one distinct and more or less compatible across apps:
- Note: short post (Mastodon)
- Article / Page: long text or shared link (WriteFreely, Lemmy)
- Image (Pixelfed)
- Video (PeerTube)
- Audio (Funkwhale)
- Event with date and place (Mobilizon)

You might have noticed that SSH connections are no longer being served at the moment.
As part of our investigation into the most recent slowness of Codeberg (which usually results in 504s being given), we have temporarily stopped those. This confirms a suspicion of ours that SSH connections have become, for whatever reason, heavy on the CPU.
We will resume serving SSH connections with a smaller queue to preserve the availability of Codeberg.

It's interesting reading the nodeinfo for #tagspub. We've seen ~320,000 hashtags over the last 3 month. Of those, 182,000 have been used in the last 30 days. The rest? I don't know. Honestly, it seems like an awful lot of hashtags! #serverstats
