I tried to set a Mastodon collection with all the people interacting today over OSN in these threads... but it seems that most of us do not allow this or are on instances that do not allow it.
If anyone has an idea on how to start this community up... you are welcome.

They do not want to, and I understand why : it is to keep it truly federated.
Furthermore, running such an instance has costs. My feeling is that it is the responsibility of the scientific community to host OSN servers.
We manage to do it for emails (SMTP protocol) : why not for OSN (ActivityPub protocol) ?

However, I have not tested fully, as there is no flagship instance. I have been testing it only through the sandbox (https://sandbox.openscience.network). As it based on Bonfire, you can test Bonfire on its campgroung : https://campground.bonfire.cafe. But you will miss the science specific features.
I am working in my university to see if we can run an instance of Open Science Network.

Yes, I think this is very promising, and somewhat already functional today. It is a flavour of @Bonfire that is dedicated to science. I see it somewhere between late Twitter and ResearchGate, but ethical, self-hosted, owned and controlled by the scientific community, and, most important connected to the Fediverse and thus Mastodon.
