Yes, I think this is very promising, and somewhat already functional today. It is a flavour of @Bonfire that is dedicated to science. I see it somewhere between late Twitter and ResearchGate, but ethical, self-hosted, owned and controlled by the scientific community, and, most important connected to the Fediverse and thus Mastodon.

However, I have not tested fully, as there is no flagship instance. I have been testing it only through the sandbox (https://sandbox.openscience.network). As it based on Bonfire, you can test Bonfire on its campgroung : https://campground.bonfire.cafe. But you will miss the science specific features.
I am working in my university to see if we can run an instance of Open Science Network.
