Reply to @dthompson@toot.cat d@nny disc@@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run (2026-10-18 09:58:14) @dthompson QUIC is a version of double ratchet from the signal protocol (trevor perrin was advising on both). i strongly recommend looking into that instead; that's what i'm basing a similar system on

dave@dthompson@toot.cat (2026-10-18 09:52:32) I have been thinking about how QUIC, the new hotness in low-level transport protocols, might apply to OCapN. My initial findings suggest it would be a poor fit but I'm still doing research.

QUIC's killer feature, stream multiplexing, doesn't do anything for OCapN because 1) OCapN mandates only one connection may be open between any two peers at a time for reasons of reference equality (in the sense of eq? in Scheme) so there can't be multiple streams at this abstraction layer 2) OCapN mandates FIFO order of message delivery and 3) unlike HTTP, OCapN is async and doesn't use a request/response cycle so once a message is delivered the pipe isn't blocked waiting for a result. The remaining advantages of QUIC are relatively minor things like faster connection due to not having to wait for a TCP handshake before doing a TLS/Noise/whatever handshake and just not being ossified like TCP.

A reliable transport built on UDP would still be very useful for OCapN because you need UDP for NAT hole punching, but idk if there's anything that can be taken off the shelf and used as-is.

Reply to @djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology DJ Sundog from the *new* toot-lab@djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology (2026-10-18 07:17:30) because one thing that has been bubbling to the surface of consciousness around FOSS type stuff over the last decade or so is that it’s not enough for something to have open licensing and freely available source code if the resources required - technological, biological, and otherwise - are overly cumbersome; that’s not open to you, that’s open to “scale players”.

Reply to @djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology DJ Sundog from the *new* toot-lab@djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology (2026-10-18 07:15:06) what I mean is that by focusing on the “what constitutes this functional component of computing” part of the system, it ignores and invalidates the “how does one constitute this functional component of computing” part of the system, and that part is the key.

I’m not talking about digging into it on any technical level to understand the implementation details, I’m talking about the prerequisites, both technological and informational, required to leverage and/or develop with the thing. what’s the combined total biomass of people required to keep this project running? what’s the documentation footprint, and what’s its update cadence compared to that of the thing itself? how has that documentation footprint changed over time?

DJ Sundog from the *new* toot-lab@djsundog@fedi.reclaim.technology (2026-10-18 07:10:47) sometimes concepts like “software bills of materials” and dependency footprints and “software supply chains” come up and they always make me chafe a bit, not because they’re poorly fit analogies but because they’re so poorly fit they manage to eject the important data to focus on the unimportant data.

don’t worry, I’ll continue to ramble on about this in a thread now.

The ReactOS open-source operating system has seen its NTFS file-system driver mature to the point that it can be finally used for installing and using ReactOS with it. NTFS formatting support is also finally now possible with this driver too...

dave@dthompson@toot.cat boosted: @glyph@mastodon.social (2026-10-16 02:30:37) It's also very frustrating to constantly have my opposition to AI be taken as an opposition to abstraction, or to automation, and a desire to do every little thing by hand. But it's the opposite. For a whole bunch of reasons, AI anti-abstracts. It adversarially creates oceans of duplication to process. It creates a situation where the AI user gets to set the terms of some ecosystem with synthetic productivity but then everyone else needs an AI to figure out what's going on in that new ecosystem.
