@ArneBab yes, building a new protocol on top of UDP is always an option, but I'm trying to exhaust all of the existing options before going down that path.
I agree that just using TCP would be fine, but unfortunately you can't punch through NATs with TCP so you're stuck with UDP.
UPnP is one tool in the toolbox but it's far from guaranteed to work and even if it works on the user's LAN it won't help if the user is also behind a carrier grade NAT.

@dlakelan yeah, those examples sound right to me. I honestly don't know all the things that a remote file system needs but I think having a capability-based control plane would be a huge benefit for access-control even if the actual file contents were transferred over some other protocol.

@steely_glint thanks for the pointer re: IL. something that runs on UDP is appealing because I can implement it in userspace.
I'm thinking about this for "native" applications on linux, etc. with direct access to UDP sockets and thus can take advantage of NAT hole punching tricks.
I think I'd rather build directly on UDP than add reliability to something like RTCTransport.

And zozokasu is really doing a one-man-army (one-furry-army...?) for the JP community since the beginning of all of this... mad respect.... a lot of the Japanese users are uncomfortable with communicating in English and I feel like they are like voicing their concerns on behalf of a lot of people.
