🔬 "Bookmark" vs "Save" research:
Sites using "Save": IG, Reddit, Threads, Bsky, FB, StackOverflow, Pinterest, TikTok
Sites using "Bookmark": Twitter, Mastodon
Readings:

- “Save” makes more sense worldwide https://newsroom-archive.pinterest.com/the-pinterest-save-button-goes-global (2016)

🤔 2 cents:
- "Bookmark" saves a *reference* but it gives the impression that you need to organize them later.
- "Save" saves a *copy* but it gives the impression that you can just look it up later.
- Logically, “Save” sounds wrong because saved posts are kinda ephemeral — they can be edited, deleted, reported, etc.
- However, “Save" feels *lighter* than “Bookmark” because it doesn’t require organising them, so there's less friction for users to use it.
Twitter’s “Bookmark” may just be legacy.

@cheeaun One problem I had with "bookmark" is the apple localization glossary has some translations that are the same as for "favorite". I was thinking of switching to "save" earlier but didn't want to confuse mastodon users who see bookmark everywhere else.

@cheeaun would be interesting to be able to organize bookmarks though!

@cheeaun one could also interpret them as: bookmarking holds your place within a larger context (a page in a book, or a page within a website), and saving holds the thing itself outside of its original context (like a post outside of its original place in the timeline)
I’ve also never been a fan of websites reusing the names of established web browser features (like bookmarks) for their own, different features.
