Thank you so much.

With “Resilience,” we’re now funding not only data security and software infrastructure but also alternatives to tech giants and their centralized ecosystems.
Under “Up and Coming,” we aim to specifically support people who are new(ish) to the #FOSS world.

In total, this means up to 19 million euros in additional funding for software developed by the civil society! 🎉

Reply to @dumpsterqueer@gts.superseriousbusiness.org fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe (2026-08-16 04:58:27) @dumpsterqueer I had a short contract fixing up code from someone who'd left and at first thought it was a terrible mess, than after a while not too bad but it'd have been nice if they left comments, and then I remembered I wrote it.

Federation now works smoothly over #ActivityPub. The Nearby and Discover timelines work as intended, and push notifications are available. #E2EE still needs work to support several browsers or devices.

It is a good start. You can join this new fediverse software at https://fedihood.social

It looks like we're finally gearing up to start migrating people over into @Mastodon's new @zulip instance for certain parts of our community next week (#MastoAdmin #FediAdmin #FediDev #Mod etc.)! It has been a long time in the making and I'm sorry for the delay, but I'm so glad we're finally going to start getting people in there <3 We'll start by beta testing with a few individuals next week to make sure everything is ready for a larger wave of people to join <3 <3

More on #DefaultServerRecommendations soon too — stay tuned!

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @aral@mastodon.ar.al (2026-08-14 14:45:03) Hi everyone,

We are aware of a Gaza Verified member who has made multiple other accounts and is sending what appear to be automated direct messages.

We have spoken to him and asked him to delete these accounts and stop the automated messages by end of today and to confirm that he understands that this behaviour damages the reputation of the hundreds of other Palestinians on Gaza Verified and Gaza Verified itself and to promise not to do so in the future.

We apologise if you’ve been contacted in this way. Our verification verifies that someone is a Palestinian from Gaza. It is not a character reference (we can no more vouch for the character of every Palestinian than we can for the character of every USian). However, we have rules clearly set in our guide (https://gaza-verified.org/guide) and these are there to protect the accounts of our friends from Gaza from being reported and thus limited/suspended.

So, please, if you need to mute or block an account, do so. If you’re a server admin and you notice mass automated messages, you’re well within your rights to limit or suspend an account but if it’s not automated, please contact us so we can talk to them and explain why what they’re doing isn’t in their long term interests. Many of you already do and I thank you for it.

Please also realise that there are hundreds of Palestinians who are Gaza verified and they are all suffering through genocide and many are watching their families starve or die due to lack of access to modern medicine (again, because Israel has bombed all the hospitals and doesn’t let aid through as part of its ongoing genocide).

In many Western countries, our governments are directly complicit and, many times, profiting from Israel’s genocide.

Whatever you do, please don’t judge the entirety of something by the actions of a few and please try and keep things – namely Internet etiquette and genocide – in perspective and ask yourselves what you would do if you were in their shoes.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @MastodonEngineering@mastodon.social (2026-08-14 18:54:01) We released the Release Candidate for Mastodon 4.7 today.

It contains very few user-facing changes, but significantly reworks the backend code to improve security and support new protocol features.

We plan to release the final 4.7 version next week, so if you like being on the edge please test this RC and send us your feedback!

The database migrations might take a long time, this is expected.

Release notes and upgrade instructions are available here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.7.0-rc.1

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @ricci@discuss.systems (2026-08-14 11:29:59) What would happen to your timeline if mastodon.social went away?

(Reposting my tool that helps you figure this out.)

mastodon.social is the biggest server on the #fediverse , with over 21% of accounts, and an even higher percentage of #Mastodon accounts.

But what does that mean to you, personally? Let's say it went away tomorrow - (assuming you aren't on it yourself), how much of your timeline would vanish?

In my case, it turns out - not a lot, actually! The biggest sources of posts that I see are (1) a very small instance that doesn't even federate with much of the Fediverse, but many of my friends are there, (2) my own instance, (3) a large tech-focused instance that is still much smaller than mastodon.social. The big guy is only 5% of the post I've seen recently.

But this might be different for you!

Find out for yourself at https://moderation-explorer.online/ . Use 'advanced mode' to see this analysis, since you need to log into see your actual feed.

You might even decide to try moving to an instance that you're more connected to?

(It's explained more on the site, but all the work happens in your browser, I don't see your identity, auth tokens, posts that get loaded, none of it.) ---Attachments--- image: https://fd.discuss.systems/media_attachments/files/117/091/506/412/838/143/original/8116a045861a450b.png

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe (2026-08-14 11:30:21) @rimu I took a quick look at pylova and I don't have a good impression from the readme, it's one of those forks that just says we're going to do everything better.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @matt@writing.exchange (2026-08-14 06:10:48) Spam is one of the biggest issues @write_as and other @writefreely instances face -- especially in the age of LLMs.

I've wanted to build a spam classification system for a while, and I'm finally getting to it this week. It'll be made especially for #WriteFreely, and plug into it to help with moderation, both manual and automatic.

Will share more details soon!

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @apps@toot.fedilab.app (2026-08-14 07:40:46) As an open source dev for years, I'd like to share how grateful I am for your long support.

Especially to the people who support my work on #Fedilab and might worry when they see me working on another project.
I'll never step back from the Fedilab project.

Working directly on Fediverse projects just makes me freer and not dependent on an API. I somehow need that, but I won't give up where you expect regular updates.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @apps@toot.fedilab.app (2026-08-14 05:25:39) #FediHood is in beta and the core is there, with more of you joining to talk with people near you, fully over #ActivityPub.

Pick your location and the app notices when a town is too small and suggests a larger one nearby, so you stay at city level, never exact coordinates. DMs are end-to-end encrypted and push notifications work.

A project like this only grows if the people using it carry it, so share it if you want it to exist.

Thank you for your support
