#vmstio Shutdown Notification
vmst.io will self-destruct in 99 hours.
This will erase vmst.io users and data from the Fediverse. Account migrations will be impossible once the self-destruct process has started.
Please begin your migration to a new server as soon as possible.

RE: https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/116817281859547761
Every now and then I see people getting really upset when features change, break, or are missing.
Let this be your occasional reminder that the fediverse is run by regular people like you and me, who are doing their best with very limited resources.
I get being frustrated, but use that energy to file a bug report, maybe even offer help, if you have the skills. Or donate, if you can afford it.
We make the fediverse better by working together.

#Holos 1.11.0 is available.
You can now view and change your email and password from a new account screen in settings. The app also compacts its database automatically in the background to reclaim space and keep things fast, and a notification lets you know when it runs. A new Compact Database button in the cleanup settings lets you run it on demand.
It also brings several fixes.

Two new maintainers join Fedify: Chanhaeng Lee and Jiwon Kwon
Chanhaeng Lee (@2chanhaeng) and Jiwon Kwon (@z9mb1) are now co-maintainers of Fedify. They have already been doing maintainer-shaped work for much of the past year, so this is mostly making the repository match reality.
Chanhaeng has done a lot of the package-boundary work in Fedify. The most visible piece was splitting the old @fedify/fedify/x/* modules into standalone packages: @fedify/cfworkers, @fedify/denokv, @fedify/hono, and @fedify/sveltekit. They then separated the Activity Vocabulary layer itself into @fedify/vocab, @fedify/vocab-runtime, and @fedify/vocab-tools, making it possible to build custom vocabulary extensions without touching the federation core. They built @fedify/next and @fedify/nuxt from scratch, contributed to @fedify/solidstart, and added Nuxt support to fedify init. @fedify/sqlite gained SqliteMessageQueue: a queue backend that only needs SQLite, handy for single-node deployments and local development. Chanhaeng also implemented the fedify webfinger CLI command, fediverse handle utilities (parseFediverseHandle(), isFediverseHandle(), toAcctUrl()), and the @fedify/webfinger and @fedify/lint packages. They are currently working on a custom background task API built around defineTask().
Jiwon has spent much of the past year making the CLI and relay tooling more useful for real ActivityPub debugging. fedify relay, backed by @fedify/relay, spins up a local ephemeral ActivityPub relay server with Mastodon and LitePub support. They extended fedify lookup with multi-URL traversal and inline image rendering for compatible terminal emulators (Kitty, WezTerm, iTerm, and others), and added configuration file support so options can live in ~/.config/fedify/config.toml or a project-local .fedify.toml rather than being passed on every invocation. They also fixed a race condition in RedisMessageQueue, corrected ActivityPub object handling for relative URLs, extended TypeScript types for RFC 6

RE: https://hollo.social/@fedify/019efa8c-a2b3-7865-be8c-2f02a9ea19ba
I'm thrilled to have contributed my second PR to @fedify, which is now part of Version 2.3.0!
#FEP_0837 is now fully implemented in the current version: https://w3id.org/fep/0837.
But why is this interesting if you're a regular person who isn't interested in ontology and JSON-LD structure?
With the basic concept of a Federated Marketplace, we could build a decentralised Amazon, Airbnb, BlaBlaCar, etc.
Of course, it is already possible to use a different online shop for each of your needs. I do this personally, as well as for multiple organisations. It's always a lot more work than just buying stuff on Amazon, for example. For me, it's because Amazon has one basic workflow. Most sales are similar. I have a single history of orders, invoices, etc.
I also ran an online shop and always sold more on other marketplaces than on my own shop.
Good platforms are missing for other use cases. It would be great if every local tourist organisation could have its own domain and marketplace, and if I could also book in my preferred way (on another marketplace).
It would of course take a long time to develop the software and then build up the communities, but I think it's possible!
Here's the repo: https://codeberg.org/54GradSoftware/economiverse #economiverse

It's cool that with #GoToSocial you don't have to deal with a web UI or anything. It makes setup and maintenance so much simpler. You can choose your own client. I'm using a self-hosted private instance of Elk, accessible on my Tailnet. I've also been using Tokodon on KDE Plasma.
GoToSocial's default 5000 character limit is what every Fediverse instance should aspire to, IMO.

Ken White, aka Popehat, a lawyer and popular poster on #Bluesky was recently suspended (https://www.popehat.com/p/a-bit-of-tedious-drama-at-bluesky). Suspension now over, Ken writes:
"...I believe that returning after a suspension carries with it an implicit promise that I won’t post that, or something like it, again. I won’t make that promise, so I won’t return to Bluesky."
Indeed, Bluesky is demonstrating they can extort censorship with the ban hammer. Other users are put on notice it's not you this time, toe the line.

@mastodonmigration My take on this, from a network/protocols/platform perspective, is that this is an indication that the "stacked moderation" that Bluesky is trying is failing to solve the scaling problem with moderation. As Ken points out, many, many other people - most of them more marginalized and with less of a platform than Ken - have been temporarily or permanently banned. In theory, Bluesky has a bunch of tools, including shared blocklists and a "label" system that give users a significant amount of control over their experience, and it's the users themselves that get to create these things. This is good, and the Fediverse has things it should learn from this. However, the original idea was that Bluesky would do minimal moderation at the "base" layer, and these "stacked" tools would be the main way users kept their experience safe and enjoyable. This was supposed to solve the problem that Mike Masnick has written about extensively that good moderation does not scale. Unfortunately, this is not how it has worked out. Yes, users make good use of the stacked tools. But Bluesky is still doing bad moderation at the base layer.

I've debated posting, but after the Montreal shooting I think I should.
I have an anonymous stalker harassing me on Bluesky. He repeatedly says he has weapons and is plotting to kill people, among other things.
I've tried my local police, FBI tips, Bluesky safety, Columbus Ohio PD (where I believe he is). Nothing is happening, so I'm requesting help here.
If there's anybody who works in cyber safety or handles stuff like this and you think you can do something, I would love to chat.

Greetings fellow kids!
We just released v0.21.3 of #GoToSocial, aka Most Sacrilegious Sloth:
https://codeberg.org/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.21.3
This is the last bugfix + dependency update release for v0.21.x!
⚠️ We strongly urge everyone currently on v0.21.2 or lower to update to this release, as it contains some important bugfixes related to exif data stripping and a security fix for a vulnerability whereby malformed AP messages can cause mischief. We will make a more detailed post about this vulnerability next week, to give people time to update. ⚠️
If you're updating to this version from v0.21.x, it's a very easy update with no db migrations.
If you're updating to this version from a version before v0.21.0, please follow the update instructions from v0.21.0, but replace 0.21.0 with 0.21.3 throughout. Be aware that the update to 0.21.x contains some database migrations. Please do read the notes carefully!
Don't switch to this version from current (25 Jun 2026) snapshots or v0.22.0 release candidates. They already have everything that's in here (and more).
Video processing fixes.
Updated robots.txt to tell more bullshit crawlers to fuck off.
Fixed some streaming API stuff.
Bug fixes related to exif stripping and malformed AP messages.
Dependency updates.
Thanks for reading!
