⚠️ We strongly urge everyone currently using v0.22.x release candidates from rc3 or lower to update to this release, as it contains some important bugfixes related to exif data stripping and a security fix for a vulnerability whereby malformed AP messages can cause mischief. We will make a more detailed post about this vulnerability next week, to give people time to update. ⚠️
Compared to rc3:
Postgres home timeline query performance improvements.
Bugfixes for timelining and streaming relayed statuses (statuses from subscribed relays actually appear in the federated timeline now 🤦♀️).
Bug fixes related to exif stripping and malformed AP messages.
Dependency updates.

Hello everyone, the two releases we announced today (v0.21.3 and v0.22.0-rc4) each contain an important fix for a security vulnerability about which we will disclose more details next week to give people time to upgrade.

@mkljczk Yeah, I saw you fixed that! I think I'll keep it around in case anyone is forever stuck on 4.6.0, and since I already went to the trouble of adding Profile, but so far I don't see the usefulness in this separation, I end p calling verify_credentials afterwards anyway to refresh the whole Account.

This release is largely about production observability: OpenTelemetry metrics now cover every major federation path, and a monitoring guide and runnable example stack ship alongside them. Also new: a delivery circuit breaker that holds queued activities for unreachable servers rather than retrying indefinitely; @fedify/backfill, a new package for reconstructing conversations via FEP-f228; and fedify bench, an ActivityPub-aware load testing command. Posts in the Discover and hashtag feeds now show a "followed" indicator next to the account that posted the message. You can disable it in settings at any time. User profiles now display their creation date.
This version also brings several fixes.

We just released Mastodon 4.6.1. It contains several important bug fixes and we recommend every instance running 4.6.0 to update.
We are also releasing Mastodon v4.5.12 and v4.4.19 with small bugfixes and a fix to a critical security issue affecting servers using LDAP_TLS_NO_VERIFY=true.

If you run a mastodon instance and require a reason for joining when someone signs up, be on the lookout for signups that are copying the bio of (random?) existing accounts and using that as the reason for joining. I am seeing several per day attempting that.

Many of you have been looking for a way to keep using Tangerine UI after its end-of-life on June 30. @matt has forked the project, brought it up to date with Mastodon 4.6, and intends to keep the theme working at least until 4.7.

gotosocial.social has updated to #GoToSocial v0.22.0-rc.3!
Now (likely for the first time ever), as a regular user, you can opt into various relays and push your posts exactly how you like. You can choose:
⁃ Whether to send Public posts
⁃ Whether to send Unlisted posts
⁃ Whether to exclude posts with Content Warnings
⁃ Whether to exclude posts with media attachments
⁃ Whether to exclude your own replies and comments
In short, you can set up "blacklist" mode (push all by default, exclude some) or "whitelist" mode (push none by default, only push specific types), and use different settings for different relays.
This is completely under your control. By default, nothing is pushed to any relay, and it’s not affected by the relays the site admin subscribes to. If you have questions or want the site to subscribe to a specific relay, feel free to DM me.
Also:
Account Directory is now supported. You can opt-in via the settings panel. You won’t be listed by default. See https://gotosocial.social/@admin/statuses/01KJET6BS4SSTW7RFXVNR7HAEX
Deleted posts no longer break threads. You can still browse the rest of the posts in the sequence.
When viewing posts on gotosocial.social via browser, if a post is inaccessible, you’ll see more detailed error messages (Deleted, Private, etc.).
You can now name your access tokens and sort them by last-used time.
If you choose to hide all posts on your web profile page, it now uses a single-column view so it doesn't look so empty.

thanks for the tag, I hadn't seen that. A very good article! It's a telling point that "Honestly, my anxiety and mental health since shutting down our server has drastically improved."
On the one hand, Mastodon's community focus makes a lot of sense given its potential strengths. On the other hand, looking at who has the money to host their own non-tiny communities -- or pay to have them hosted -- could also reinforce the cultural monolithism the article talks about. So, we shall see.
