Designed the new Betula logo. It might seem simple at first, but quite a lot of effort went into it. There are many images in the article, including procedurally generated birch trunk patterns, bent paper stripes, and several Krita and Inkscape screenshots.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @stefan@stefanbohacek.online (2026-07-12 22:05:03) @scottsthoughts @scott I run my server on DigitalOcean, but if I were to start again, I'd probably just go with https://masto.host.

Some other options I know about: https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/lessons-learned-from-running-a-single-person-mastodon-instance/#hosting

Hope this helps, and good luck!

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @silverpill@mitra.social (2026-07-12 15:44:46) Updating FEP-ef61: Portable Objects: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/pulls/883

I added a section about key management. This part of nomadic identity was often misunderstood - some people thought that secret keys need to be managed by servers, and that servers could impersonate users.

No, there are 3 options:

- Server-side signing: secret keys are managed by a server (gateway). Activities are generated and immediately signed by a server.
- Delegated signing: secret keys are managed by a separate service. Activities are generated by a server, which calls a signing service and then adds integrity proofs to activities.
- Client-side signing: secret keys are managed by a client. Activities are generated and signed by a client, which communicates with a server via FEP-ae97 API.

Server-side signing is easier to implement, but client-side signing was the goal from the beginning - and this is what I am trying to do with Mitra Mini

Everything is made possible through your bug reports, your feedback, and also your financial contributions, which is for me the hardest part to talk about. They cover the server costs, and they also help me in my daily life.

My GoToSocial instance's DB size has been reduced from around 18GiB to around 7GiB. The new post pruning feature in GoToSocial v0.22.0 works :ablobcatgooglytenor:

I did this on my laptop of course. If I did this in my cheap VPS instance it would take hours and hours.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @thoralf@gruene.social (2026-07-11 19:36:48) There are some fundamental changes to the #Phandroid repository, which affects all existing users:

The jump to 2.0.0 fixes some basic (organizational) errors I committed while creating the test version (e.g. correcting a wrong application ID, etc.)

This is a disruptive change and requires manual interaction due to the fact that Obtainium will refuse to update to 2.0.0 and beyond.
The exact steps are outlined at https://codeberg.org/umrath/Phandroid#readme

Reply to @hongminhee@hollo.social fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe (2026-07-12 03:08:58) @hongminhee Yeah, and it seems to me the Mastodon API has evolved with a willful ignorance of what other platforms have added, e.g. when they added a quote post field they clobbered the quote post extension already added by other platforms.

Reply to @hongminhee@hollo.social fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe (2026-07-12 01:20:44) @hongminhee Several platforms have extensions or variations of the mastodon api that I try to accommodate, but it depends how well they're documented (gotosocial, mitra, pleroma, akkoma) or if it's not too hard to glean from the source (neodb, pixelfed) and, not least important, if I have a test account to try them out.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @hongminhee@hollo.social (2026-07-11 22:47:14) The more I work on Hollo, the more its Mastodon-compatible API feels like a straitjacket. I chose it for a practical reason: people could use existing clients, and I wouldn't have to build a frontend too. I still think that was the right call at the time.

The problem is that clients can only expose what Mastodon's API represents. I keep coming up with ideas, then asking whether the API has anywhere to put them. If it doesn't, I have no way to get the feature in front of users.

ActivityPub API (so-called “C2S”) might be the eventual answer, but it doesn't help much today. I don't know of any clients Hollo users could realistically use with it, and adoption is still limited.

So I keep coming back to the idea that Hollo will need a frontend of its own. I'd keep the Mastodon API for existing apps. I'm not especially eager to take on a whole frontend, but I don't see another way to try ideas that don't fit Mastodon's model.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @FediTips@social.growyourown.services (2026-07-12 00:57:25) Are you writing a website link in your Mastodon post or profile? If so, remember to include https:// at the beginning so that people can click it!

example.com is written without https:// at the beginning and is just a piece of unclickable text.

https://example.com is written with https:// at the beginning and can be clicked to open its website.

Using Holos with a custom domain and a cloud for media allows you to own your portable identity on the #Fediverse. Relays become only an infrastructure for it. Your device runs the #ActivityPub server and works as smoothly as any other app. Micro-blogging, media, and video, all from a single account. Switch with a simple tap.

I see the fediverse as this organic garden with genuine connections, so seeing weeds spring up makes me feel instantly protective of this space. If it makes sense?
