Reply to @shannonkay@bookstodon.com Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 17:33:46) @shannonkay @sylvia My piece was certainly with blogging in mind, for sure, but I think the point still stands for basic websites. I use Jekyll for one of my own sites, pretty complex imo. The point about no dependencies also isn't true since you need a 3rd party web host unless you have an always-on server with a static IP in your closet 🤷‍♂️

Reply to @neatnik@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 17:30:17) @neatnik I didn't write this to sell my web service. I wrote it because I disagree with your premise. I hold the position that getting HTML files on a web server is more complicated for non-techies than techies naturally think ✌️

Reply to @neatnik@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 17:25:10) @neatnik I haven't missed the point. I'm merely suggesting it's more complicated than you say. Maybe we have different ideas. Perhaps you could outline the steps required to maintain a blog using raw HTML and CSS hosted somewhere on the internet and we'll discuss over a practical example?

Also, "uploading them to a web server" literally introduced a dependency on others! 😅🤷‍♂️

Reply to @raeubervater@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 06:53:47) @raeubervater sorry I get a lot of email and forget things 😅 if enough people ask then maybe I’ll do it, but hidden posts should do the trick. I’ll keep chewing on it anyway

Reply to @alexandra@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 06:50:53) @alexandra @raeubervater looks great! Thanks for giving Pagecord a go. A few new things being cooked, but mainly refinements for the coming months I think. Then again I tend to always say that and then I go down an unexpected rabbit hole! 😅

Reply to @raeubervater@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 05:11:35) @raeubervater i knew someone would ask for this 😆 why? what's wrong with 'hidden' urls like we already have in Pagecord? literally the same thing no?

Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-21 01:04:55) "Popular IndieWeb bloggers have been talking about "Hardcore IndieWeb" recently. The idea is doing everything yourself: building a site with pure HTML and CSS using a text editor on your laptop and hosting it... from any cheap web host, or even from a cupboard at home.

Nothing wrong with that if you have the time and the patience, or if you need complete control over everything on your site, but I'd argue against doing this in the general case."

Reply to @d6y@mastodon.green Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-10 05:02:07) @d6y I think so!

Reply to @d6y@mastodon.green Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-10 03:59:54) @d6y yeah it's possible via webmention.io and custom javascript (coming to a pagecord near you soon)

Reply to @sylvia@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-09 19:34:18) @sylvia :) it's just some custom javascript

Reply to @robb@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-09 19:34:03) @robb not doing it myself, far too much work for little return. just a bit of custom javascript

Reply to @olly@indieweb.social Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-09 19:27:36) @robb view the post to see

Reply to @robb@social.lol Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-09 19:27:20) @robb webmentions work! except the emoji doesn't. your 👀 arrived as ????. One ? per UTF-8 byte, so webmention.io's column is utf8 not utf8mb4 🫠

Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-09 19:05:26) Just exploring webmentions for this post https://olly.world/59921988

Reply to @archiwuminternetu@mastodon.com.pl Olly@olly@indieweb.social (2026-08-08 18:32:55) @archiwuminternetu @sebastian I’m working on lowering the email cost so I expect to up the limit over time. There isn’t actually a hard limit right now, this is just guidance. Pagecord blog has 600 subscribers, nearest after that is around 50. Surprises me but email subs just don’t seem that popular. There would have to be a cost if someone got into big thousands but I’d make it as cost-effective as possible.
