I used to be quite active on that one bird social network until that one guy purchased it, and then I removed myself from it. From those days, I remember learning a lot from many other folks, many of them in a different field: economists, sociologists, environmental scientists, statisticians, humanities scholars, etc. but also from policymakers, people who were in tech or in many other industries.
I am opening this account with the hope of recapturing that experience. #introduction

My name is Anna and I am an academic studying different topics around sustainability and social responsibility. In recent projects I have focused on labor issues, on the circular economy, on consumer behavior, and on how DEI spreads along supply chains, but I am interested in infinitely many other topics. Methods-wise I use mostly econometrics, with occasional experiments and (recently) analytical modeling. I teach mostly MBAs and some ExecEd. #introduction

@apps ActivityPub's Follow activity is intended to be used on actors: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#follow-activity-outbox.
This is one of the reasons I proposed that "observer" actor. Another option is to use a custom activity (e.g. Watch).

@Tuba @larma Thanks to everyone working on it. Would be so great if most GTK apps would be also available on Android similar to most KDE apps. Maybe it's possible to get some grant to accelerate the effort?

Thanks, I read your FEP. The main difference is that the Follow targets the Note directly, with no observer actor in between. It also adds two conditions: the author must be indexable, so consent is explicit, and the Follow uses endTime because a thread is short-lived. On my side, Holos falls back to polling the replies collection when a server ignores the Follow, so it keeps working everywhere.

Object observer is an ActivityPub actor that can be followed to receive object updates.
However, I never implemented it. Pulling context and replies is often enough.

Following a thread is now available in the latest version of #HolosSocial. #ActivityPub already lets you follow an object, not only an account, so a Follow can target a post. You then receive new replies, even from accounts you do not follow. A thread is short-lived, so the Follow uses the standard endTime property to expire on its own. It works best when other servers support it, that's why I want to turn it into a #FEP.

@sabrinkmann Why create different versions when you can use one?
There are ways in which the Fediverse can accomodate the greater number of different services:
- Content negotiation: every server advertises supported types, and the sender needs to adjust activities depending on what the recipient understands.
- Duck typing: recipients don't filter received objects by type, and instead look at their properties.
I don't think the first approach can work at scale. It's like serving different websites to different web browsers.

I think content negotiations would be interesting as soon as we start using different content types more frequently. For example, with software that has menus, I guess it would be interesting to have a note version, an event version and just a proposal version for each item.
Conversely, if you needed to buy a ticket for an event, it would also be interesting to receive a proposal for that.
