Lio Novelli, the @NGIZero_Slovenia representative, published an enjoyable write-up of the conference from the perspective of someone deeply into Free Software, getting to know the hardware side of Free and Open Source.

- Partial interoperability with private communities on Lemmy (available in Lemmy v1.0 beta). You can follow them and participate in discussions.
- The ability to mute threads was added.
- "Local", "Federated" and "Profile directory" links were moved from the navigation bar to the "Explore" page.
- It is now possible to determine custom feeds to which a user has been added (profile menu -> "View custom feeds")

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @apps@toot.fedilab.app (2026-08-25 06:12:03) A feature I could not offer with #Fedilab: letting people upload their own custom emojis.

It does not cost much and it is a real personalisation: these emojis belong to their owner only, separate from the instance emojis and not shared with other users. I am happy to offer it with #FediHood.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @apps@toot.fedilab.app (2026-08-25 05:23:43) I added a note about LLM usage in the #FediHood README, and I also made things clearer in the contributing guide. Using an LLM is OK as long as a human reviews the code and fully understands what it does. No vibe-coding.

Being transparent matters on a project, to avoid disappointing people who contributed. ---Attachments--- image: https://cdn.masto.host/tootfedilabapp/media_attachments/files/117/152/351/644/110/474/original/ce0d994bbd8b0f2d.png

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @internetarchiveeurope@toot.community (2026-08-24 18:26:08) 🎯 We will be migrating to a new server because https://toot.community will be shutting down. We are considering hosting our own instance (seems like overkill) or moving to https://mastodon.nl Does anyone have a good suggestion for other options?

And FYI - If you have an account there and haven't yet migrated to a new server, don't procrastinate. https://social.jorijn.com/@jorijn/statuses/01KYN00AP3NCZXCFB96KQB8GN2

📦️ As part of our @nlnet milestones, we've modularised dokieli's #WebAnnotation, #LinkedDataNotifications #ActivityStreams, and #WebAccessControl code into standalone open source TypeScript libraries that anyone can use.

These components have been foundational to dokieli, and useful for building decentralised social web apps.

Go build something fun and let us know :)

I feel better about the Fediverse than I did a year ago, but I can also see the other points.

What makes me hopeful is that so many people are working hard to make the Fediverse even better.
The problem is that this work is so often unpaid or underpaid, and there is currently not enough funding for all the activity that is needed. I can't see any quick fixes, but maybe medium term fixes?

That's why I will continue to develop things for and with the Fediverse.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @silverpill@mitra.social (2026-08-24 00:57:35) The ap-next developer guide was removed from the https://activitypub.rocks website: https://github.com/swicg/activitypub.rocks/issues/63 (by the father of the Fediverse, no less).

The reason:

It's a fork outside the SocialCG.

This is utter nonsense. The guide refers to the original ActivityPub specification and even to SocialCG reports covering Webfinger and HTTP signatures. The other ap-next project is NomadPub - a collection of FEPs that significantly expand the capabilities of the protocol but don't diverge from the original spec.

However, since dissenting opinions about the present and the future of ActivityPub are now openly censored, a fork may indeed be necessary.

fedicat@fedicat@pc.cafe boosted: @jorijn@social.jorijn.com (2026-07-29 03:32:45) Today, I’m letting you know that toot.community will close permanently on 28 October 2026.

This decision is final, and the server won’t be handed over to anyone else.

When I started running toot.community, I really enjoyed it. Over time, it became more stressful and less rewarding.

Every day, I deal with spam, bots, technical issues, abuse reports, and user conflicts. Much of the moderation ends up being about personal disagreements rather than actual rule-breaking.

More importantly, I don’t enjoy how people interact on social media anymore. Too often, conversations turn hostile or confrontational. A small amount of conflict and bad actors takes up a disproportionate amount of time and energy.

I find myself feeling more angry or discouraged after spending time as an admin, and that’s not what I want from social media or a volunteer project.

There’s also the financial side. I’m very grateful to everyone who donated, but donations haven’t covered costs for a long time. I’ve had to shoulder most of the expenses, time, and responsibility myself.

The server is now closed to new registrations and will remain online until 28 October 2026, so you’ll have three months to find another Mastodon or Fediverse server and move your account.

You can find Mastodon’s official migration guide here: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

Please note that Mastodon can move your followers, but it can’t transfer your old posts or uploaded media to your new account. If you want to keep a copy, download an archive.

If you’d like to stay in touch, you can follow my personal account here (@jorijn).
