So I usually hate sending over bluesky links anywhere since I'm not a fan, but Rob Ricci highlights some important distinctions between #activitypub and #atproto
Fundamentally, activitypub is designed to be useful with a partial view of the network. (Narrowing down to #mastodon here) Likes are communicated, mentions are communicated, and so on.
Over at atproto land, you have no option but to write to your repo, and so you have no choice but to view the entire network to say, find replies and such (narrowing to #bluesky here). So the only way you can get your data is to read the network and filter it yourself, or have someone else do it for you, which doesn't solve the problem, only shift it.

🔥 The Bonfire Social 1.0.5 release candidate is out!
This one brings archipelago mode (opt-in, allow-list federation for tightly-knit communities and networks), a more lightweight search backend (see changelog for migration steps), broadcasting announcements, another embeddable widget, PGP-encrypted emails, and many UX improvements and fixes.

Sweet. Dutch government needed improved accessibility for its https://social.overheid.nl Mastodon instance. It decided to cofinance this, and the features landed in the brand new 4.6 release. “In this way we invest in our own communication tools and those of the full fediverse at once.”

A small request for everyone using Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0, no matter how you installed it: if something looks broken or off, please report it along with your version details (which Mastodon version you are running, which version of Mastodon Bird UI you built, and how you built it, Custom CSS or SCSS in your Mastodon fork).
Several post-launch fixes have already been made thanks to people reporting issues, and I can only fix what I know about. Bug reports genuinely make the theme better for everyone: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues
For example, I just fixed a bug where the profile description lost the spacing below it (no margin after the bio). If you noticed that, grab the latest 4.0.0 and it’s fixed.

I am so proud of our little fediverse community for the empathy shown on this matter. Many amazing people build things here with very little to zero compensation for their work.
We should enjoy and celebrate their creativity when inspiration hits, and encourage them to continue finding new annoyances they want to fix in the future. 😅

This is way, way too long in even *starting* to happen.
The writing has been on the wall ever since Twitter was sold. X is anti-govt, anti-people, and no-one should believe that they have "an audience" there. It's a megaphone for hatred.

Tagging the first version of the relay will be a proud accomplishment for me. It means officially publishing an #ActivityPub relay, here only to maintain your identity and activities when your devices are offline.
It brings custom domains for self-identity, #E2EE DMs, and multi-device support, while each device runs its own AP server. Not tied to a single platform, it supports microblogging, images, or even videos in one click.
Full sovereignty, without installing an instance on a VPS.

I am really happy with my work today, I have never seen the relay so stable and fast. The response time is now really short, around 20 ms, and hasn't moved for hours. I am really close to tagging the first version of the relay as 1.0.0.

#Fedilab has an old entry called "Extra features", which was added long ago when #Mastodon forks came around with features such as reactions. This is something to rework: the app can detect what an instance supports and enable supported features automatically.

As I'm trying to put together more collections, I'm noticing that many accounts, even ones you'd expect to want to have wider reach, aren't opted in to being featured in discovery experiences (e.g. trending page, collections, follow recommendations). If this sounds like you, please, go to More -> Privacy & Reach and check your preferences.

Not sure if this is the right way, but handling *collections page* (list of collections) links too, not just collection page (list of accounts).
As the link is not the same as currently-logged-in instance, it'll be "unfurl"-ed, almost like how we "guess" the post links, then fetch the remote API call. On a *collection* page itself, it's possible to use search API to unfurl the federated local collection ID, so switching between them is possible.

[Announcement] It’s time to say goodbye to Tangerine UI 🧡
Almost three years ago exactly today, I started working on Tangerine UI with the goal of creating a full custom theme for Mastodon’s Web UI, with a fun color scheme, multiple variants, cute icons and animations, and visual features that did not exist in other alternatives. The project immediately became incredibly successful: hundreds of stars on GitHub, with at least 50+ Mastodon instances that decided to offer the theme to their 40,000+ cumulated users (including several institutional instances!).
Tangerine UI was very ambitious in regard to how crudely it actually works (overriding Mastodon's CSS). And I feel like I was successfully able to push the limits of what's possible with this constraint. But maintaining it is sadly no longer sustainable for me. Which is why the time has come for me to announce that Tangerine UI will reach its end of life at the end of this month, June 2026:
• Tangerine UI is no longer being maintained, effectively immediately.
• The repository will be frozen and archived (made read-only) on June 30th.
• Current open issues and PRs will not be addressed, and the last supported release of Mastodon will remain Mastodon 4.5.x
• Mastodon 4.6 and future releases of Mastodon will not be supported and will break the theme.
Don’t get me wrong, I had a ton of fun creating the theme and its four variants. But as soon as Tangerine UI had come to a point I had considered finished, it immediately became genuinely depressing to have to spend many hours of my spare time on it every time a new major version of Mastodon was released — all just to un-break it and bring it up to speed, and without the fun felt on evolving the project and adding new features. With my motivation declining, my energy spent on other side projects (some of which I’d actually get paid for), and the fact that even I stopped using my own theme day-to-day in favor of other Mastodon clients, it feels like now is the right
