@liaizon I'm going with the spirit of the new mastodon quotes, that you shouldn't be quoting a post just to dunk on it (in which case the original poster can revoke the quote), and you shouldn't be liking a post that's quoting a post just to dunk on it.

@fedicat lets say someone quote posts a post my Mastodon about their new redesign, and dunks on it a lot. if you `liked` that post, you probably are not liking the post about the design, you are liking the dunk in which case it doesn't make sense to `like` both

Okay so current alternate "tweetdeck-style" frontends on my radar:
Appears to be a fork of Mastodon-Glitch maintained by GTS?
- Self-host "akkoma-fe"
- "nicolium"?

What happens in Mastodon 5.0 if I, *not* using Mastodon 5.0, reply to someone else's post with a "private mention"? Will they, on Mastodon 5.0, be able to see the private mention is branching off of a thread? Will that fact be hidden? Will it be formatted like a qrt?

Ah! Also I hate this. I recognize why private messages within a thread can be confusing, but I really like how private messages on Mastodon are "hallway track" side discussions from regular threads instead of there being a shitty IM app crammed into every social network which everyone just uses to set up IM conversations on better IM apps. It's very good that Mastodon DMs are *pinned to discussions*, and odd that Mastodon is killing virtually the only feature distinguishment they have with bsky.

I’m going ahead with this: liking a quote post will automatically like the quoted post and there will be a slightly different like button icon to indicate this behavior in a completely non obvious way

I hate when interfaces that previously had nice, clear lines, *literal lines*, between interface elements of different semantic type, get redesigned to instead have vague, fuzzy, screen-eating¹ whitespace dividers. I have hated this since 2009. I stopped using the iPhone because it adopted this philosophy. I feel it massively increases cognitive load because instead of functional areas the screen is just various floating text
¹ I use apps at a relatively high zoom level and my screen is not big

I hate the anxiety of feeling like the window I'm typing into is a soap bubble that will disappear if I try to interact with anything

This is it; I don't like anything about it and will be considering alternate frontends when it ships. I have no feedback. My advice is "identify everything different between Mastodon 4 and 5, and do the opposite of that". The worst thing about this is the cursed "floating" compose window. I hate this in gmail, I hate it in every app that has it. I like how in current Mastodon Advanced I can work on a post on the left side while looking at something else on the right side

Concerning #FediHood, the verification email contains only a few words with a link carrying the token.
Unfortunately, this makes the email get rejected as spam by some providers. I neglected that part, having tested with only three providers. Sorry about that.

Oh humanity!
I was ordering at a Taco Bell kiosk and next to me at a different kiosk was a couple in their early 20s. The dude is punching in their order and gets to checkout and says to his girlfriend: “The discount code isn’t working.”
He pushes more things on the screen and apparently still no-go. He asks the employ for help. The employee comes around the counter and looks and says, “It says you haven’t met the minimum to get the discount.”
Dude: “So what do I do?”
Employee: “You need to order more food sir.”
Dude: “So I have to order more to get the discount?”
Dude: “So what do I do?”
I was done ordering and left to wait for my food before I screamed at the dimwit.

It's been a few months since I visited Japan; as you may recall I was traveling around *a lot*.
Here's a projection of all the places I visited, in numerical order.
Data comes from photo EXIF, plotted on OSM tiles and rendered with a Python script doing some Math.
A big question before I went was whether the Japan Rail Pass was worth it. I contend it was, but would people be interested in an actual analysis to prove that?

Nervous hearing people vaguely complaining about some UI redesign in "Mastodon 5.0". mastodon.social (usually effectively Mastodon Ruby's staging server) is still on 4.7.0-rc.1.

@paul I wonder how much interest there would be if Apple were to relaunch these devices. Specifically, ones with physical buttons and perhaps a slightly revamped interface.
