@jac Perhaps it was a mistake to read about that drama from a few days ago in the first place. I could have ignored it and got on with other things. I’d be in a different frame of mind today.

@bstn Yeah, I get that impression too. You don't have to listen to everything / everyone, though. Everyone's different, but I don't really like getting into online debates anymore. I'm too old and way too tired for that most of the time. So like I said, I'm just doing the best that I can. If that's not good enough for some, I'm not too bothered by it. Life is stressful enough. 🤷♀️

@bstn Got it. Just read your post about it. Yeap, been there done that a lot while using Micro.blog. It felt great first but then I changed my mind .. it looked to crowded, all over the place and I didn't wanted someone coming to my site/blog being lost in tiny bits and pieces. In the end, unfortunately or luckily, there is no right or wrong.

@jac I suppose that was the original idea. But I get the impression that everyone adds their own elements to it, thereby creating something like clans: if you follow exactly the same principles as me – join us. If yours are slightly different – find yourself another space where you’ll feel at home, but you’re unlikely to feel at home with us.

@bstn I’d miss the interaction. I have a lot of repeat follows, both here and via rss. Posts are the exact same, of course. Sometimes I missed what someone said here, something worth replying to, and I got it on the feed reader. A lot more often than I’d like to, I’ll come here, look the person up, and reply. Sometimes there’s no commenting system on the blog, other times there’s an email (I have that on my blog) contact, right on the post’s page, and I’ll still come here to reply.
This part of the internet feels like a cafe,or the proverbial town square. One reads the news, catches up with friends, all in the same place. Being able to easily engage is why it’s my favorite place.

@rene The different is a logging style: more short posts, less longer. Or only short posts. Such like a social media profile. But without social media. Sometimes that idea pops into my head.

@bstn I don't think that's true, personally. I mean, from the discussions over the last few days I totally get how you could have that impression, but it's not how I interpret the source material. Also I think of the Indieweb principles as a guiding philosophy, and not a club that you join as such.
The core principles are own your own data (that can be as simple as keeping a local copy), have some way of connecting with others through your site (just an email address is good enough for that but you can add more) and being in control of what you can or can't post (in other words, the freedom to express yourself as you desire).
You can do that on a platform you build yourself or one built by others. I think Bear is a good example of a hosted platform. It's been around a long time and the owner thus far has behaved with good intentions.
That's my interpretation at least (not saying I'm right, I'm no expert!).
I've been arguing with myself about whether to just go back to Eleventy for a week or so, before the events of the last few days. What really pushed me over the edge was the way Olly mishandled customer data, when he fed it to an LLM without seeking permission first. I'm probably missing a lot of info out here but I didn't want it to turn into an essay either, so I'll stop there. :)

Linux 7.0-mk2 Released For Multi-Kernel Linux With Promising Performance Results
Last year a multi-kernel architecture was proposed for the Linux kernel to allow multiple independent kernel instances to co-exist on a single physical machine. Each kernel with "multikernel" Linux can run on dedicated CPU cores whole sharing the underlying hardware resources. Linux 7.0-mk2 released today with the kernel patched for this multi-kernel behavior...

Really sorry to the folks here on #MastodonAppUK , #Universeodon and #FediMedi who have had a much longer outage than planned.
Unfortunately despite doing a huge amount of pre-configuration when it got pushed into our live environment a lot of stuff has (and still is) broken.
I'm still working as hard as I can to get everything resolved as quickly as I can.

@jac I’m increasingly getting the impression that the idea behind the IndieWeb is incredibly simple, but can only be put into practice by people who know how to build their own websites and set up servers. Everyone else is stuck somewhere in between. They’re standing, as it were, on the edge of a precipice – they want to be part of the IndieWeb world, they’re invited to join it, yet at the same time they don’t meet the criteria and aren’t able to fulfil them.

@bstn It's a starting point at least! There's a lot of nuance in some areas, and much will depend on personal points of view on where exactly that line should be drawn.
I started this year with a new Eleventy site. Then the sheer convenience of Pagecord drew me in (just being able to write and hit publish is a big draw for an ADHD brain). But now I've told myself to stop being lazy and I'm putting together a new Eleventy site to merge the original two (actually, three) sites. However, it will be hosted on Netlify, and I've no idea about how they handle things on their end. Probably not in a way that lives up to the standards of many in the Indieweb community, though.
It's an ever changing landscape, so I constantly re-assess.

@bstn This gives me a headache too. Unless you're doing it all yourself, from your own hardware that sits in your own home. Otherwise it's quite difficult to eliminate the fact that somebody, somewhere along the line, is doing something that crosses a line.
I operate under a "doing the best I can" principle. It's not going to be perfect, not much in life is. The big one for me is avoiding the big tech companies as much as possible, but we all have our own thoughts and opinions on these things. "Do your best" is an acceptable philosophy, I feel, but others mileage may vary. :)
